About The Castro
The Castroは19世紀を通じてEureka Valleyとして知られる農地だった。Castro Streetは、メキシコ統治時代のAlta Californiaの知事だったJosé Castroにちなんで名付けられた。1887年にMarket Street Cable Railwayがこの谷まで延伸すると住宅ブームが起こり、今日も残るヴィクトリアン様式の建物が街区を埋め尽くした。何十年もの間、この地区は主にスカンジナビア系とアイルランド系の労働者階級が暮らす地域だった。Timothy Pflueger設計のCastro Theatreは1922年にCastro Street沿いに開業した。
この地域は1960年代後半から1970年代前半にかけてゲイタウンとなった。第二次世界大戦中および戦後にサンフランシスコで除隊した軍人たちがこの街に留まり、家賃は安く、ヴィクトリアン様式の住宅も豊富にあった。ゲイの住民たちは家を購入して修復し、Castro Street沿いに店を開いた。
Harvey Milkは1973年に575 Castro StreetにCastro Cameraを開き、この店から選挙運動を行った。1977年、彼はBoard of Supervisorsに選出され、全米で最初の公然とゲイであることを公表した公職者の一人となった。彼とGeorge Moscone市長は1978年11月27日、City Hallで暗殺された。
