The Castro

About The Castro

The Castro曾是19世纪时被称为Eureka Valley的农田。Castro Street以José Castro命名，他是墨西哥时期Alta California的总督。1887年，Market Street Cable Railway延伸至此山谷，引发了一场住房建设热潮，建成的维多利亚式建筑至今仍矗立在街区中。数十年来，这里一直是工人阶级社区，居民多为斯堪的纳维亚裔和爱尔兰裔。由Timothy Pflueger设计的Castro Theatre于1922年在Castro Street开业。

该地区在1960年代末和1970年代初成为同性恋社区。二战期间及战后经由旧金山退伍的军人留在了这座城市，租金低廉，维多利亚式住房充足。同性恋居民购买并翻新了这些房屋，并在Castro Street沿街开设了各类商铺。

Harvey Milk于1973年在575 Castro Street开设了Castro Camera，并在店内开展他的竞选活动。1977年他当选为市参事会（Board of Supervisors）成员，成为全美最早的公开同性恋民选官员之一。1978年11月27日，他与市长George Moscone在市政厅（City Hall）遇刺身亡。
