About The Castro

The Castro 在整個19世紀曾是一片名為Eureka Valley的農地。Castro Street 是以José Castro命名，他是墨西哥時期Alta California的一位總督。Market Street Cable Railway於1887年抵達這片谷地，並帶動了一波住宅興建熱潮，至今仍矗立著當時建成的維多利亞式建築。數十年來，這裡一直是勞工階層社區，居民多為斯堪地那維亞裔與愛爾蘭裔。由Timothy Pflueger設計的Castro Theatre於1922年在Castro Street開幕。

該地區在1960年代末至1970年代初成為同志社區。二戰期間及戰後經由舊金山退伍的軍人選擇留在這座城市，加上租金低廉、維多利亞式住宅供應充足。同志居民買下並整修這些房屋，並在Castro Street沿線開設商店。

Harvey Milk 於1973年在575 Castro Street開設了Castro Camera，並從這家店經營他的競選活動。1977年，他當選為Board of Supervisors的一員，成為全美最早公開出櫃的民選官員之一。1978年11月27日，他與市長George Moscone在City Hall遇刺身亡。
