Otra, the Mexican restaurant at 682 Haight Street in the Lower Haight, will close in early December. Owners Nick Cobarruvias and Anna Sager Cobarruvias confirmed the decision to The San Francisco Standard, which reported it on September 9; Hoodline reported the same timing. The restaurant opened in May 2021 and is serving dinner nightly until it closes.
Why It’s Closing
The owners told the Standard the decision came in part so they could focus on their two children and on Chingonas, their salsa macha business. What settled it was a summer slowdown that ran slower than usual, a pattern that has cut into margins at Bay Area restaurants this year. “There’s no real smoking gun,” Cobarruvias told the paper. “It’s good to go out before you’re forced out, so to speak.” The couple say they hope Otra continues in some form, though they have not said what that would look like.
What’s Still Running Until December
Otra is open daily from 5pm to 10pm. The owners say they plan to keep serving tacos on fresh corn tortillas and mezcal margaritas through the final weeks, along with dishes from earlier menus. Reservations are taken only for parties of six or more; smaller groups join a waitlist, and the restaurant asks you to specify indoor or outdoor seating when you do.
How Otra Got There
Cobarruvias and Sager Cobarruvias signed the lease on the Haight Street space in January 2020, two months before the pandemic closed dining rooms across the city. Otra opened in May 2021. Their first restaurant, Son’s Addition, closed that same year, and it was their former landlord’s familiarity with that restaurant that made the Haight Street space available to them.
What Happens to the Space
A new tenant has already signed a lease at 682 Haight Street, the Standard reported, with details still to be announced. Cobarruvias said he knows the incoming operator and is glad about who is taking it on.
The Block Around It
Several bars and restaurants have opened near Otra since 2021. The cocktail bar Stoa opened kitty-corner from the restaurant in 2023, Bar Jabroni opened next door in 2024, and the pizza restaurant Jules opened three blocks away in May 2025. Further west on the same street, the DeLuxe reopened at 1511 Haight Street in June after a three-year closure.
Getting There
682 Haight Street is in the Lower Haight, between Pierce and Steiner. The 7 Haight/Noriega runs along Haight Street, and the 22 Fillmore crosses at Fillmore Street. The nearest BART station is 16th Street Mission, about a mile and a half southeast on foot.
