Black Bird Bookstore & Cafe
What you need to know
A bookstore and cafe in the Outer Sunset
Black Bird is an independent bookstore and cafe on Irving Street in the Outer Sunset, about two blocks from Ocean Beach. The bookstore side opens at 9am, the cafe at 7am, so early risers can grab coffee before browsing the shelves. Owner Kathryn Grantham built the space around a mission of amplifying diverse voices, and the curated selection reflects that: you’ll find books here that aren’t on the front table at Barnes & Noble.
The bookstore
The selection spans adult and children’s books, with a focus on authors from underrepresented communities. Staff recommendations are handwritten and personal, not algorithmically generated. If you’re looking for something specific, ask. The staff knows the inventory and can point you to titles you wouldn’t find on your own.
The cafe
The cafe serves coffee and light food from 7am daily. It’s a real neighborhood spot: people come in with laptops, dogs wait outside, regulars know the baristas by name. The coffee is solid without being fussy about it.
Community events
Black Bird runs a rotating art gallery with monthly exhibitions, open mic nights, flea markets, and a recurring “Games + Pie Night” on the third Wednesday of each month. There are also regular storytimes for kids. It’s the kind of programming that makes a bookstore feel like a community center rather than just a retail shop.
Getting there
The store is at 4541 Irving Street between 45th and 46th Avenues. The N-Judah Muni line runs along Judah Street, one block south, with a stop nearby. If you’re driving, street parking on Irving is usually available in this part of the Sunset. Pair a visit with a walk on Ocean Beach, which is a 10-minute stroll west.
