Mid-Market Gets $500,000 for a Theater District Pilot on the 900 Block of Market Street

The 900 block of Market Street, between Fifth and Sixth streets, is getting $500,000 in private money for a 12-month pilot meant to turn Mid-Market into a working theater district. Supervisor Bilal Mahmood and the Mid-Market Foundation, the nonprofit arm of the Mid Market Business Association, announced the funding on Thursday, October 15, 2026, according to KQED, The San Francisco Standard and Mission Local.

Who Is Paying

The seed money comes from three donors: the San Francisco Downtown Development Corporation, a nonprofit started by allies of Mayor Daniel Lurie; Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen; and Proper Hotel Group, which runs the Proper Hotel at 45 McAllister St. None of the three outlets reported how much each donor gave. Mahmood told KQED it is the first time the Downtown Development Corporation has invested west of Powell Street.

What the Money Pays For

The pilot is overseen by the Mid-Market Foundation. Across the three reports, the planned uses are:

  • Theater-inspired and interactive street lighting.
  • Public art, banners and murals.
  • Subsidies for theater, performance, arts or education groups that lease vacant storefronts on the block, plus converting empty storefronts into performance or rehearsal space.
  • Pop-up performances and paid street performers before and after shows. The business association already pays buskers through an existing program.
  • Tracking foot traffic, theater ticket sales, business revenue and visitor sentiment to measure results.

Fernando Pujals, the foundation’s executive director, told The Standard that a full revamp of the neighborhood would take $5 million to $7 million over several years. The foundation’s press release, quoted by Mission Local, says “the goal is to turn Mid-Market into a district that is busy all evening, and not just before and after performances.”

The Theaters in the District

KQED counts about 15,000 live performance seats across the Golden Gate Theatre, the Orpheum, the Warfield, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and A.C.T.’s Strand Theater. Mahmood said the area draws about one million visitors a year. The Standard reported that 15 San Francisco theaters have closed since 2020, including PianoFight, Cutting Ball Theater and the Exit Theater.

Mahmood first proposed a Market Street theater arts district in February. “Just like Broadway in New York,” he told KQED of the long-term goal. He told Mission Local, “There’s so much money being invested in downtown, but not into the Tenderloin.” None of the outlets reported any legislation or Board of Supervisors vote tied to the pilot; it is privately funded.

The First Festival

The Mid-Market Foundation is holding the first Market Street Arts and Theater Festival on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 4 to 10 p.m. across six blocks of Mid-Market, according to Mission Local. The Standard reported more than 50 free performances and events, including aerial dancers, karaoke cable car rides, DJ sets and opera singers in a bar.

Visiting the Mid-Market Theaters

The 900 block of Market sits between the Powell Street and Civic Center BART and Muni stations, and the F Market & Wharves streetcar runs along it. The Golden Gate Theatre is at Golden Gate Avenue and Taylor Street, the Orpheum is at Market and Hyde streets, and the Warfield is at 982 Market St. The building above the Warfield reopened in September as Warfield Commons, with KALW and 10 other arts and media tenants.
