Mister Jiu’s
The Verdict
"Book the tasting menu through Resy at least two weeks out. The whole roasted duck needs 48-hour advance notice and is the best thing on the menu. Walk-ins should try the bar early in the evening."
What you need to know
Mister Jiu’s is the Chinatown restaurant that proved Chinese cooking belonged in the same conversation as the city’s top fine-dining rooms. Chef Brandon Jew opened it in 2016 in the former Four Seas banquet hall on Waverly Place, and it earned a Michelin star within six months. He won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: California in 2022.
Jew was born and raised in San Francisco’s Richmond District and trained at Zuni and Quince before spending time cooking in Shanghai. The food at Mister Jiu’s is Cantonese tradition filtered through California ingredients and technique.
What to Order
The menu shifts seasonally, but a few mainstays:
Cheung Fun: Rice noodle rolls with seasonal fillings.
Whole Roasted Duck: Order in advance. Served as a multi-course presentation.
Fried Rice: Whatever protein is in season. Crab, squab, lobster.
Sesame Balls: The dessert. Crispy outside, chewy inside.
The cocktail program is built around Chinese ingredients and is worth ordering from. The tasting menu is the best way to see the full range of the kitchen.
